The Word Game Glossary: 40 Terms From Alphagram to Whiff

Every competitive community develops its own language, and word gamers are predictably enthusiastic about theirs. Here are forty terms you will meet in clubs, forums, and strategy writing, each with the tactical idea underneath it.

The scoring vocabulary. BINGO: playing all seven tiles for a 50-point bonus (35 in Words With Friends). DOUBLE-DOUBLE: a word spanning two double-word squares, multiplying by four. TRIPLE-TRIPLE: the rare nine-times multiplier across two triple-word squares, the biggest single-play event in the game. NATURAL: a bingo made without blanks.
