About the Word Ladder Puzzle

The Word Ladder puzzle was invented by Lewis Carroll — the author of Alice in Wonderland — in 1877. He called them “Doublets.” The goal is simple: change one word into another in the fewest possible steps, where each step creates a new valid English word.

Classic examples: LEAD → GOLD (LEAD → LOAD → GOAD → GOLD), or CAT → DOG (CAT → COT → DOT → DOG).

Word Ladder Solving Strategies

  • Work from both ends simultaneously. Think about what words are one step from your target, not just from your start.
  • Use common vowel swaps. Switching A/E/I/O/U in the middle of words creates many valid words.
  • Change final or first letters first. Prefixes and suffixes give you more flexibility than changing middle letters.
  • 3-letter words have the most paths. Short words connect to more neighbours — great for practice.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Word Ladder?

A Word Ladder is a puzzle where you transform one word into another by changing exactly one letter at a time, with each step forming a valid dictionary word. Invented by Lewis Carroll in 1877, it is also called a word chain, word links, or doublets.

How do I win the Word Ladder game?

Reach the target end word in as few steps as possible. Each step must change exactly one letter to form a real dictionary word. The game shows your step count vs the optimal (shortest possible) path.

What if no Word Ladder exists between two words?

Not every pair of words has a valid word ladder. The solver uses breadth-first search (BFS) to verify a path exists before starting the game. If no path exists, it will tell you and suggest trying different words.
