About the Word Ladder Puzzle
The Word Ladder puzzle was invented by Lewis Carroll — the author of Alice in Wonderland — in 1877. He called them “Doublets.” The goal is simple: change one word into another in the fewest possible steps, where each step creates a new valid English word.
Classic examples: LEAD → GOLD (LEAD → LOAD → GOAD → GOLD), or CAT → DOG (CAT → COT → DOT → DOG).
Word Ladder Solving Strategies
- Work from both ends simultaneously. Think about what words are one step from your target, not just from your start.
- Use common vowel swaps. Switching A/E/I/O/U in the middle of words creates many valid words.
- Change final or first letters first. Prefixes and suffixes give you more flexibility than changing middle letters.
