The Math Behind Wordle Openers: Why CRANE-Style Words Keep Winning

Your Wordle opener is a data-gathering instrument, not a guess. A look at letter frequency, positional probability, and why openers like SLATE, CRANE, and ADIEU trade off differently than most players think.

Every Wordle player has an opening-word opinion, and most defend it emotionally rather than mathematically. But the opener question has a real structure: your first guess is purely an information-gathering move, since no skill can make it likely to be the answer outright. The right question is not which word feels lucky but which word most efficiently shrinks the space of remaining possibilities.

Start with raw letter frequency in the Wordle answer pool. The most common letters across the roughly 2,300 original answer words are E, A, R, O, T, L, I, S, N, and C, in approximately that order. An opener built entirely from this set, such as SLATE, CRANE, TRACE, or LATER, tests five high-frequency letters at once and will produce at least one colored tile in the large majority of games.

Position matters as much as presence. S is a very common first letter in the answer pool, E a very common last letter, and A appears disproportionately in the second and third positions. This is why SLATE and CRANE consistently rank near the top of solver analyses: they do not just contain frequent letters, they place those letters where they most often occur, raising the odds of green rather than merely yellow results.

The famous vowel-first strategy, opening with ADIEU or AUDIO, tests four vowels immediately. The trade-off is real: you learn a great deal about vowels, which appear in every answer, but you spend the turn testing U, the rarest of the five vowels, and you learn nothing about the consonant skeleton that usually identifies a word. Solver analyses consistently rank ADIEU well below consonant-balanced openers, though it remains far better than a random word.

What about second guesses? Two coherent schools exist. The coverage school plays a second word with five entirely new letters (after SLATE, something like CORNY or MUCID), maximizing raw information across two turns. The constraint school immediately reuses confirmed letters in new positions to hunt the exact answer. The mathematically stronger approach in normal mode is usually coverage for guess two, then constraint from guess three onward, because early answer-hunting wastes turns when thousands of candidates remain.

Hard mode, which forces you to reuse every revealed hint, flips this calculus: coverage plays become illegal, so opener choice matters even more. In hard mode, openers that risk producing common-pattern traps (like the -IGHT or -ATCH families, where SIGHT, LIGHT, MIGHT, NIGHT, RIGHT, TIGHT all remain live) are punished badly. Words that discriminate within those families early, by testing R, L, M, and N quickly, become disproportionately valuable.

Repeated letters deserve a note: answers like LEVEL, ERROR, and SASSY exist, but no repeated letter belongs in an opener. Duplicate letters return strictly less information than two distinct letters, so their proper home is the endgame, when the pattern already suggests them.

A practical way to measure your own opener: track your average number of guesses over 30 games with one fixed opener, then switch and track again. Most players who move from a casual opener to a frequency-optimized one shave 0.2 to 0.4 guesses off their average, which compounds into far fewer losses on the six-guess limit.

The same frequency reasoning transfers to Scrabble and anagram games: knowing that ER, ES, ED, and IN are the most common English bigrams speeds up unscrambling because you test likely letter pairs first instead of permuting randomly. Letter frequency is the shared engine underneath every word game.
